Communication Arts Announces 61st Annual Design Winners

Communication Arts magazine, a professional journal for those involved in creativity in visual communications, has published the results of its 61st Annual Design competition, the most exclusive major design competition in the world. Of the 2,947 entries submitted to the competition, only 126 winners were selected by a jury of ten respected creative professionals, representing the work of designers, art directors, design firms, agencies, publishers, and in-house creative departments.

Lisa Sirbaugh Creative (formerly Lisa Gorham Creative) was among the 126 entries selected for inclusion, winning in the category of Trademark Design for Clean Green Simple, a respected online resource for people interested in eating healthy and clean, and minimizing their impact on the plant.

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing a broader range of entries from smaller, more independent studios. It was also great to see the representation of smaller clients with smaller budgets where creativity really has the opportunity to shine.

The selected projects are handsomely reproduced in Design Annual 61, the September/October 2020 issue of Communication Arts, both in print and digital editions, and online at commarts.com. With the largest international circulation of any trade journal on visual communications, having work selected is considered a significant professional milestone to the creators and publishers of these award-winning projects.

Communication Arts journals are an essential part of any designer’s studio and their Design Annual is considered to be one of the most exclusive major design competition in the world. It’s incredibly humbling to have this work recognized in the Trademark category, and a huge honor to be featured alongside such extraordinary creative talent.

Lisa Sirbaugh Creative Honored at 2020 American Advertising Awards

This year the American Advertising Federation-Greater Frederick celebrates its 30th anniversary and along with it, their American Advertising Awards gala, held Saturday, February 22, in historic downtown Frederick. As always, the ADDY Awards is one of my favorite events of the year, spent with some pretty amazing industry friends, celebrating creative excellence in advertising. No doubt, this year’s gala was one wiiiild and crazy night!

I’m thrilled to share that Lisa Sirbaugh Creative (formerly Lisa Gorham Creative) received two Gold ADDY Awards for Clean Green Simple in the categories of Integrated Brand Identity Campaign and Logo Design.

Clean Green Simple—a lifestyle website designed for people looking to eat clean, live green, and keep life simple—was a particularly fun rebranding project. Plus, I got to learn a ton about Google AMP and online publishing app requirements. It was a WIN, WIN!

It was a true honor to receive this recognition on behalf of an amazing client. Congratulations to Clean Green Simple on an incredible year, to all the 2020 ADDY winners, and a big thank you to this year’s judging panel.

In 2019, Clean Green Simple welcomed new ownership and along with it, an evaluation of its brand, content, audience, and online presence. During the discovery phase, Clean Green Simple outlined their rebranding goals and the need to comply with Google AMP logo guidelines and online publishing app requirements. Built upon the brand assessment and Google specifications, a strategic plan and new brand identity was developed.

Not only is the new logo clean, green, and simple, it’s complies with all of Google’s standards. And by specifically developing a wordmark as the logo, online optimization is further maximized. The refined design allows for optimum clarity at small sizes—a key online publishing detail, particularly for the brandmark, due to Google’s increase of displaying search results exclusively with a favicon. Beyond all the technical details, the new iconic G brandmark is a symbol for the clean eating, healthy lifestyle, and sustainable living that Clean Green Simple’s readership desires.

Inspired by Mother Nature herself, a new bold and bright color palette was developed. From leafy greens and vibrant vegetables to garden soil, the brand colors were carefully selected for their industry influences—food and health; gardening and agriculture; and of course, the environment.

See the full brand identity project.

American Illustration Announces 34th Annual Competition Winners

It’s an incredible honor to announce that four illustrations created for the Catoctin Breeze Vineyard Composer Wine Series have been selected for the American Illustration 34 Annual. This year’s winning work was presented at American Illustration’s annual launch party and exhibition held in New York City on November 4–5, 2015. From the 9,175 entries submitted by illustrators, magazines, agencies, publishers, and schools, only 592 winning entries were selected and are on permanent display in The Archive. Of those winning entries, 377 pieces were selected to appear in the AI 34 Annual Book—these whimsical illustrations included.

A huge thank you to the American Illustration 34 grand jury for this incredible recognition and congratulations to all of this year’s immensely talented winners!

The American Illustration 34 Grand Jury

This year’s distinguished jury, made up of art, photo, and design creative professionals, included: Lindsay Ballant, Creative Director, Foreign Policy; Sarah Garcea, Art Director, Inc. Magazine; Walter Green, Art Director, Lucky Peach; Anne Ishii, Owner, Massive Goods; Wyatt Mitchell, Creative Director, The New Yorker; Oliver Munday, Graphic Designer, Knopf/Pantheon Books; and Eric Skillman, Graphic Designer, Criterion Collection.

Founded in 1982 by a committee of esteemed illustrators and art directors, American Illustration–American Photography (AI-AP) was created as a direct alternative to other leading organizations and companies of the day who it was thought were not recognizing unconventional, “cutting-edge” work that was being produced by unheralded artists who were pushing the boundaries of commercial work.

The AI-AP juried award annuals, offering high visibility and well-deserved recognition where it matters most, are still published in all their large-format, luxurious, hardcover glory, staying true to their founding principles of celebrating great photographers and illustrators, lavishly showcasing commissioned and personal work that’s ahead of its time, while honoring the publications, creatives and agencies responsible for assigning and utilizing the winning images. Students and schools are also celebrated right along side established and emerging artists.
